I just wanted to say we have the freedom, but…

Yesterday I read a very unfortunate story about the high security zones within the University of Colombo. The article was in vikapla.org. Even though the article is published sometime back I got to know this yesterday so I made a little comment there. I just stated that we have the freedom to be in our university premises at any time and it’s unfair for the colombo students to make their university a high security zone.

Anyway when I checked it in the morning my comment has vanished. I don’t know what’s wrong with my comment but for some reason they have removed it. So I checked the site to see whether there’s a comment policy to find out the reasons but there’s nothing like that.

But the vision of vikalpa was stated like this. “To lead, by example, the creation of citizen journalism in Sri Lanka in all three languages, so as to enable progressive discussions on Sri Lanka’s future.” How disgusting! Is this called citizen journalism? What did you show by example? Can you call this a progressive discussion?

I don’t know how many other comments have been removed but all I have to say is that think twice before you make a comment there.

New seven wonders of the (less than?)half of the world announced

The new 07 wonders announced on 07/07/07 is everywhere on the web now. They call it new seven wonders of the world but it is actually not because of the following reasons.

  1. They selected them based on the votes they received. Anyone can vote freely once via online. But what about the people who don’t have access to the web?
  2. If someone want to vote more than once they can do it through SMS and telephone. For every call and SMS, an additional amount of money is charged. This restricts the votes to more rich people.
  3. The voting process was available in only 12 languages and the people who don’t speak these languages have been neglected.
  4. This is just a popularity contest and the scientific and educational work has been neglected.
  5. People voted for their country not for the wonder if something from their country was on the list. For example their was a campaign in Brazil called Vote no Cristo (Vote for the Christ) to vote the Christ the Redeemer Statue and now it’s a wonder.

So now you can see how unreasonable and illogical selection is this. There may be more things that you know regarding this matter and you may have your own opinion. Please share it with others.

Did you recognize the language I used to write my title? It’s English but upside-down. Look at it again. Isn’t it cool? If you want to try it just visit http://www.revfad.com/flip.html and type what you want and click the flip button. I found this on Digg.
