Camping at Hanthana

I have been to the top of hanthana several times and no need to say they are very nice memories. Two weeks back one of my room mates’ some friends arrived to our university to climb hanthana and stay a night there. I have never stayed a night there so I also joined them and here are some nice photos taken.

I just wanted to say we have the freedom, but…

Yesterday I read a very unfortunate story about the high security zones within the University of Colombo. The article was in vikapla.org. Even though the article is published sometime back I got to know this yesterday so I made a little comment there. I just stated that we have the freedom to be in our university premises at any time and it’s unfair for the colombo students to make their university a high security zone.

Anyway when I checked it in the morning my comment has vanished. I don’t know what’s wrong with my comment but for some reason they have removed it. So I checked the site to see whether there’s a comment policy to find out the reasons but there’s nothing like that.

But the vision of vikalpa was stated like this. “To lead, by example, the creation of citizen journalism in Sri Lanka in all three languages, so as to enable progressive discussions on Sri Lanka’s future.” How disgusting! Is this called citizen journalism? What did you show by example? Can you call this a progressive discussion?

I don’t know how many other comments have been removed but all I have to say is that think twice before you make a comment there.

What do you expect from a students’ union?

What is the first thing comes into your mind when you hear the word “students’ unions”? Protests, strikes, conflicts…? Have you ever heard of something other than that?

Actually students’ unions do lot more work but the media reports only the protests, strikes etc. So, I thought of writing some work done by our union. “Arunella” is one such annual program which consists of scholarship program, O/L seminar program and social projects. You can read about this on http://yasaruwan.gunathilake.com/arunella/.

Please don’t forget to say what you think because that’s very important for all the students of our faculty. Also I’d like to know what you do you expect and what you don’t expect from a students’ union?
